/horror gets back to its roots with ‘Starve Acre’ (2024)

An oak tree lurks beneath the grounds of the old farm, having been cut down sometime in the past but momentous enough to warrant its own mythology. They choose to show it as interstitials of dark, deep underground shots. Roots and veins and arteries, throbbing and pulsing and wet.

/horror runs to the theater for ‘Dark Harvest’ (2023)

My favorite thing about Dark Harvest is how masterfully Slade uses chiaroscuro. It’s evident in 30 Days of Night as well as his “‘Hannibal” episodes, but the man is just really really good at it.

/horror goes to church with “Midnight Mass” [2021]

I really like Mike Flanagan’s tv exploits. I thoroughly enjoyed ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ and I sobbed at ‘The Haunting of Bly Manor’. I was beyond thrilled to see the next series would be set in a fishing village because that’s very much (/horror Learns About The Matriarchy With “Blow The Man Down”) my…

/horror wants to play a game with “Spiral” [2021]

It’s worth noting this is ‘Spiral: From the Book of Saw’ and not the ‘Spiral’ (2019) from Shudder. Happy Octoberween y’all! Some of you may remember that I have previously endured all seven Saw movies (Part One and Part Two). I marathoned them again in the pandemic because here in America (specifically Texas) we’re in…

/horror swims with “Deep Blue Sea 3”

I have a small confession to make. I’ve seen “Deep Blue Sea 3” already. I might own it. But we’re going to talk about it, because it deserves it. “Deep Blue Sea” (1999!!!) is probably one of the best shark movies to date. It’s got really great scares and while there are some deaths I…

/horror Quarantines with “The Beach House”

Week two! Look at this consistency. This week we’re watching “The Beach House” (2020). This is a Shudder original, which I think I’m sortof woefully under-aware of and should probably watch more of these. “The Beach House”, written and directed by Jeffrey A. Brown (this is his first feature-length film), is also a nice, tidy,…

/horror Learns About The Matriarchy With “Blow The Man Down”

Hey, it’s uh, been a hot minute. Like many of you, I’m seeking refuge in this trashfire year by watching a lot of horror movies. If there’s anything nice to be said, maybe it’s the surprising surge in female-led ocean horror that 2020 has given us. I’m going to be taking a look at a…
